FAQs

What you need to know

Fractional Laser uses laser energy microbeams to create areas of affected tissue that extend through the epidermis into the dermis. The body’s natural healing process creates new, healthy tissue to replace the areas of affected tissue and this will result in healthier, younger looking skin.

Most treatments last no more than an hour. Following treatment, the skin is cooled, and a medical grade wound healing gel is applied.

The laser works on many skin types, including very light and some darker skin types. It can improve the appearance of deeper wrinkles, enhance scars and help to correct a wide variety of other skin imperfections. We will discuss the treatment options with you.

Following some treatments you may resume your regular activities on the same day; more aggressive procedures may require several days of healing.

Common side effects are edema (swelling), erythema (redness), dry skin, itching, and acne breakouts.

Edema is expected immediately post-treatment and generally resolves within 24-48 hours. It may last up to three to five (3-5) days or longer in some clients. Do not re-treat if excessive swelling is present.

Erythema is expected immediately after treatment and generally resolves within seven (7) days.

Do not re-treat if excessive redness is present.

Broken capillaries or bronzing may occur approximately one to three (1-3) days after treatment. These side effects typically resolve without intervention in three to seven (3-7) days.

Hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin), scabbing, burns, bruising, or blistering are rare but may occur, some of which may result in scarring.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) lasting one to six (1-6) months or longer or permanently may occur.

There is always the risk of infection, potentially resulting in side effects mentioned herein.

Blanching and significant redness.

There is a risk of resulting unsatisfactory appearance and failure to achieve the desired result.

There is the possibility of coincidental hair removal with treatment to hair-bearing areas. There is a risk that the hair regrowth may be changed, such as little or no regrowth or more regrowth than before.

Acne and/or Herpetic breakouts.

Application of cool gel packs immediately the following treatment can help alleviate itchiness and stinging that may occur after treatment.  Once the skin has cooled down, an ointment or gel may be used to cover the treated skin and keep it moist to avoid the skin drying out and being crusty and desquamated.

NOTE: The ointment or gels may exacerbate acne breakouts.

Gentle cleansing is permitted after treatment. At the provider’s discretion, the use of non-irritating cosmetics may be considered based on the level of treatment performed, and tissue response.

Clients should avoid heavy makeup or moisturizers for 24 hours after treatment.

Treated areas should not be picked or scrubbed.

As healing occurs, it is essential to avoid injury and sun exposure for at least two weeks following treatments. It is highly recommended that clients use a sunscreen designed for sensitive skin with SPF 30 or higher containing UVA/UVB protection between treatments.

Those being treated should also continue to use SPF 30 or higher up to 6 months following final treatment whenever they are outside.

Avoid excessive exercise for one to three days after treatment.

Once the treatment area has healed, some itching or dryness may occur. This will gradually clear. The use of non-irritating, non-comedogenic moisturizers may provide some relief.

Depending on the skin condition and size of the area being treated, we may recommend a single treatment session or a series of following treatments for the best result.
